Types of Dental Bridges
Our dentists' wide range of experience allows Kasperowski Family Dentistry in Westfield, MA, to tailor treatment to our patients' needs. For patients missing one or several teeth in a row, we offer both traditional and implant-supported bridges.
Traditional Bridge
A traditional bridge features prosthetic teeth, called pontics, which are supported by dental crowns at both ends of the bridge. Your natural teeth on either side of the gap will be reshaped so that the crowns can easily slip over them and be cemented in place, securing the bridge.
Traditional bridges are fast, affordable solutions for missing teeth and can usually be completed in just two appointments.
While traditional bridges are more economical, there are some downsides worth considering. Reshaping your natural teeth to support the bridge puts those teeth at greater risk of complications in the future. Patients with a traditional bridge will want to take extra care to prevent decay in these support teeth.
Implant-Supported Bridges
Implant-supported bridges, as the name implies, are supported at each end by dental implants, which are small titanium or zirconia posts that are surgically embedded in the bone. New bone naturally grows around implants, securing them in place. At this point, a bridge made of pontics between implant-supported crowns can be attached.
This method offers two benefits. First, no healthy teeth are altered to support the bridge. Second, the implants stimulate regenerative bone growth in the jaw, helping to maintain its strength.
Just as with traditional bridges, the implant-supported bridge will need to be replaced eventually. However, with implant-supported bridges, you'll likely only be replacing the bridge. The implants themselves can last decades or even a lifetime.
You'll generally require two implants to support a bridge. However, if you are replacing only one tooth, all you will need is a single implant topped with a crown.

How Long Does a Dental Bridge Last?
A bridge can last five to 15 years with proper care. The better your oral hygiene, the longer your restoration will likely last. Just make sure to brush twice a day and floss at least once daily and see your dentist every six months.
Are Dental Bridges Expensive?
It depends. A full implant-supported bridge made of premium materials will cost more than a traditional bridge made of the most affordable materials. However, if you have insurance, you can expect that your plan will contribute to at least a portion of the cost.
